David White, who scored in the tenth and thirtieth minute led United to a 2-0 lead at half time. After Gordon Strachan had come on for Tony Dorigo after the half-time break Leeds continued to score more goals from Rod Wallace, Brian Deane and Gary Speed, Nigel Worthington rouned off the scoring in the seventy-first minute as Phil Masinga came on for Rod Wallace three minutes later and David O'Leary replaced David Wetherall two minutes after that.
